About Surabaya
"Jer Basuki Mawa Bea" is the motto of arek-arek Surabaya (the people of Surabaya), which means dream can only be achieved through sacrifice. Surabaya city has been known as heroic city due to the during the revolution for independence in the late 40s. The city is situated on the north coast of Java, facing Madura island in the north. It is surrounded by Gresik on the west and Sidoarjo on the south. Like other north coastal areas, Surabaya is typically flat with on 3-6 m above sea level. Most of the time, the city is quite warm, reaching to 32-340 Celcius, with two seasons, dry and rainy seasons.
Surabaya has been the center of financial and administration of East Java for decades, with business and industrial centers spread out around the city. It is the second largest city in Indonesia, after Jakarta, with around 3 million inhabitants.
Transportation
Its international airport, Juanda, has been used as major node for regional flight routes to the eastern part of Indonesia. There are a number of international flight to Surabaya, that is from Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia.
The major moda of city transportation are oplet
Oplet - mini bus kind of public transportation) which is run and owned by individuals. Each oplet is dedicated to a specific route. Each route starts and ends in terminals (stops) and does not use halte as intermediate stop. Other moda of transportation is city bus, run by a state owned company called DAMRI. There are also other moda of transportation which do not serve a certain route, like taxi and angguna
Angguna - City Multifunctions Public Transportation, and becak
Becak - a tradition public transportation. The newest initiative that has been implemented is komuter
komuter, that is a special train that serve only shorter line, i.e. from neigbhouring urban areas to Surabaya, compare to normal train.
Like other major city, Surabaya is facing a serious transportation problem, high cost of human mobilization, which is cause by congestions, limitation of transportation infrastructure, non integrated transportation system, etc. This has been a major issue that the local government is trying to solve nowadays.
